Letter from the NABI Foundation Co-founder & CEO
November 12, 2011
Greetings NABI Supporters and Fans,
As the NABI Foundation nears the end of another year, we are truly grateful for all the support and patience from everyone! The transition into an official 501 (C) (3) Non-profit organization has had its many challenges, but through these challenges the NABI Foundation was able to better recognize the programs the Foundation will be focusing on to better serve the youth NABI is committed to.
Though we appreciate all the support we received for producing a Pow Wow in 2009 & 2010, the Foundation will be focusing more on our youth programs, with an emphasis on Sports, Health and Education. We will produce a smaller festival scheduled for November 2012, celebrating Native American Heritage Day. This event will include Native American entertainment, dancing and Indian Market.
Two thousand and twelve is going to be an exciting year, though NABI is no longer going to produce a Pow Pow, we are going to continue to organize the exciting annual “Chasing the Sun 10K & Health Fair” scheduled for March 31, 2012. It is our hope to build this race into one of the top annual races in Arizona.
July 11-15, 2012 will also be the 10th Anniversary of the Native American Basketball Invitational! 10 Years-wow!!! Our goal is to register over 100 teams to celebrate our anniversary. This exciting national tournament has served over 10,000 youth, encouraged the NCAA to honor tribal sovereignty by exempting Tribal tournaments from their same state rule, created over 50 college athletic scholarship opportunities and allowed NABI to grant over $75K in scholarships to our alumni and Native American youth organizations. To date, NABI has not turned down one request for funding! That is something we are proud to announce and a goal we will continue to strive for.
Along with NABI Basketball, we will host NABI Baseball & Softball Invitational, in partnership with the Arizona Diamondbacks, NABI Youth Physical Education Program for youth age 8-14, and NABI Youth Motivational Presentation, featuring the #1 Slam Dunker in the world and Nike N7 athlete, Kenny Dobbs.
All information about our exciting programs is available on our website, so please take time to enjoy our site and feel free to contact us with any questions.
And remember, NABI Foundation is a non-profit and welcomes your support via donations, volunteering or spreading the word about all our successful programs.
Thank you for your continued support.
Many Blessings,
GinaMarie Scarpa

SECOND ANNUAL SPRITE® SLAM DUNK SHOWDOWN TO DETERMINE AMERICA’S BEST AMATEUR DUNKER AT NBA ALL-STAR 2011
– Competition Will Be Streamed Live on NBA.com and Televised by NBA TV–
– For Second Consecutive Year Seven-Time NBA All-Star and 2009 & 2010 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player LeBron James to Serve as Judge –
NEW YORK, Feb. 9, 2011 – The tomahawk, between the legs, windmill and 360 are some of the most memorable dunks of all-time. Will we see an all-new dunk added to the mix as the four finalists in the second annual Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown compete for the title of North America’s best amateur dunker?
We’ll find out when the Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown will take place at NBA All-Star Jam Session presented by adidas at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Friday, Feb. 18 at 9:30 p.m. ET / 6:30 p.m. PT. The event will be streamed live on NBA.com and a 30 minute recap program will air on NBA TV at 12:30 p.m ET./ 9:30 a.m. PT on Saturday, Feb.19.
An All-Star panel of judges will help determine the winner, including NBA All-Star LeBron James of the Miami Heat, NBA Legend Darryl Dawkins, and Sprite All-Stars Carlos “Los” Smothers and Myree “Reemix” Bowden. The event will also feature a special performance from the Jerk All-Stars dance crew at NBA All-Star Jam Session during the event.
Each participant will perform two dunks in the first round. The two contestants with the highest score from the judges will advance to the final round. The two finalists will complete two dunks and fans will determine the winner via SMS text message. The champion will receive a $10,000 grand prize and have the honor of presenting the trophy to the NBA player who wins the Sprite® Slam Dunk at STAPLES Center the following night.
The four finalists who will compete at the Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown at NBA All-Star 2011 are:
- Kenny Dobbs, 6’3” a.k.a. “K.Dobbs” – Dobbs, 25, hailing from Phoenix, Ariz. is a 10-year dunking veteran who won the semifinal competition in his hometown.
- Haneef Munir, 5’10” a.k.a. “Young Hollywood” – Los Angeles native Munir, 21, has been dunking for more than eight years and won the semifinal competition in his hometown and will be dunking in front of a hometown crowd at the Showdown. He was also a finalist at last year’s inaugural Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown finals at NBA All-Star 2010 in Dallas.
- Terry Cournoyea, 5’9” a.k.a. “T-DUB” – Cournoyea, 24, of Saint Paul, Minn., brings eight years of dunking experience to the Showdown and is the winner from the semifinal competition in his hometown.
- Justin Darlington, 6’4” a.k.a. “Jus Fly” – Darlington, 22, from Toronto, Canada, is the only finalist to clinch a spot in the Showdown through the online competition by uploading his dunk clip to NBA.com/dunk. He has been dunking since he was 18.
Inspired by the NBA Sprite Slam Dunk contest that takes place annually on NBA All-Star Saturday Night presented by State Farm, Sprite and the NBA launched the national search for the best amateur dunkers with competitions in eight cities throughout the summer of 2010. James also led a panel of judges that picked two semifinalists from video entries. Through online votes, fans narrowed the top 10 down to the four finalists who will compete in Los Angeles.
Fans can visit the online home of the Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown at NBA.com/dunk, where they can access highlights from all the local competitions, including the finalists. Sprite is the world’s leading lemon-lime soft drink and has been the official soft drink of the NBA since 1994.

34th Annual Pueblo Grande Museum Indian Market Saturday and Sunday, December 11 & 12, 2010
(Phoenix, AZ) The 34th Annual Pueblo Grande Museum Indian Market returns to its original site, the Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park, after thirteen years at other city parks. The dates are Saturday and Sunday, December 11 and 12, 2010. More than 200 Native American artists participate in this major cultural event. This is a great event for both the family and fine art collector with art prices ranging from $10 to $5,000.
Five-time World Champion Hoop Dancer, Derrick Suwaima Davis (Hopi/Choctaw), will perform each day. The daily entertainment schedule includes traditional and contemporary musicians, singers and dancers and features violinist Arvel Bird (Paiute) who studied classical music at ASU.
Derrick Suwaima Davis will perform once each day. When asked why he only uses five hoops when many other dancers use as many as twenty he answered, “In the Southwest typically we dance with a fewer number and a faster rhythm. I use five hoops, as they represent an aspect of my Hopi beliefs and to signify that one should try to do the best he can with the least amount possible.” Derrick serves as the Artistic
Director of the Native Trails that starts its season at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts. When not traveling to “Alaska, or Japan, or someplace new” he contemplates his next championship challenge. Maybe we will see a SIX-time World Champion. Go Derrick!
The public will have an opportunity to see demonstrations on making of arrows and stone tools, sample native foods, and explore a military exhibit from WWI through the Afghanistan war. This exhibit will also provide information on Native American recipients of the U. S. Congressional Medal of Honor.
Visitors are encouraged to use the METRO Light Rail that stops within easy walking distance of the event site. Light Rail riders who present a valid transit pass at admission will be entered into a free drawing that includes a weekend stay for two at the Moenkopi Legacy Inn with visit to a Hopi artist studio or a Navajoland weekend package consisting of guest lodging at home of award-winning artist, Ted Draper, Jr., who will provide a personalized mini-pastel workshop and tour of the famous Canyon de Chelly.
Admission fee is $5 per person and children under 12 are free. Admission fee includes free admission to the museum during the annual Indian Market weekend. Pueblo Grande Museum address is 4619 E. Washington Street, Phoenix, AZ 85034. Public parking is on the north side of Washington Street. The event takes place rain or shine.
